Sage ERP 1000

As a business that has worked with Tetra Cim 1.7, Tetra Cim 2000, Tetra CS/3, Sage Enterprise through to today using Sage Line 500 and Sage 1000, we admit trying to convey the product or the service we offer to potential or existing customers is challenging and usually takes an in-depth discussion or a series of discussions to educate people, not in a condescending way but because ERP is not a commonly known or an everyday used word.  Therefore after having several views on naming conventions used since Sage took control of the product, we finally applaud them if the rumour mill is to be believed.  As of July this year Sage 500 and Sage 1000 will be synergised and simply known as “Sage ERP 1000” and will be available with or without CRM functionality

Sage Line 500 is the transactional engine and old school product of what is a business wide software solution often referred to as ERP within the Sage software stable. Sage Line 500 is still at the heart of Sage’s ERP offerings and will be for some time to come due to the barriers to change. A multi-company, multi-currency and mutli language ERP system regardless of what your development platform is is expensive and timely to undertake. This is the very reason Sage have not re-written the product to any large degree since they’ve had ownership of the product or at least from the users view-point anyhow. For all intents and purposes Sage 1000 today is simply Sage 500 at the core with a CRM wrapper using Sage MME. The glue between the two is SQL Views, stored Procedures and a email engine (exchange). Some problems with this is that the aesthetics of the product have been criticised such as its lack of basic windows functionality, not being able to click a column heading to change sort patterns, its sensitivity to case, not being able to readily export documents to word, excel or other from standard report output.

Sage ERP 1000

However, finally and in context of Sage ERP 1000 it seems the naming, marketing strategy and branding from Sage is being unified. This as much as its another change can only consolidate the product, its branding and thus its identity as a software solution to business needs. From July 2010 Sage ERP 1000 will be launched.

This will put to bed one hopes the confusion amongst its resellers and moreover its customers or potential customers.

Q: What is Sage ERP 1000 and how does it differ from Sage 1000 or Sage Line 500 V7?

A: Sage ERP 1000 is a unified product which can be sold with or without a CRM solution in-built. This will avoid the Company selling two different products into the same market space (Sage Line 500, Sage 1000). This has to help, especially with the UK introduction of Sage ERP X3, but we’ll leave that topic for another day.

Q: What does Sage ERP 1000 offer or promise in its roadmap?

A: What would have been Sage 1000 V3 is now Sage ERP 1000 (release date July 2010 and it includes )

A more engaging and user friendly interface to replace the user interface as exists in the customer domain today (GUI/Universal Client (web)) which will utilise tabs to replace menus, sub-menus. Future version release 3.1 (Jan 2011) will include tab-toggle on columns to change sort order, export documents, increase desk-top integration.

• PDF printing as standard rather than a separate or 3rd-party experience with associated costs. One hopes this extends to archiving and something similar to sticky-notes where you can cross-reference documents or items to transactional data.

• Desk-top integration, no longer is it acceptable to have to write specific reports that can later be pulled into excel with a degree of difficulty. The new version will allow instant channeling of information into a variety of output formats that can be worked on and affect the originating source. (ie: You could action certain tasks in your ERP/CRM system from Excel.

• Exceptional reports and Business Intelligience (BI) within the offering. Although we have to say what you can achieve with SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) Is phenomenal. Lots of Sage BI and 3rd party products (Qlikview) but to name a few are readily available and easy to deploy and use.

• The introduction of another layer in the software model (S-Data) Which will allow the use of user created fields rather than hunting for existing fields often inappropriate and too few for meaningful resolution to end-user requests.

• Greater use of work-flow to aid greater customer service experience within a Company and with its external customers. • Greater use of API’s and FCE extensions to empower the end-user when standard offerings within the product fall short.
